E-Verify Far From Perfect – Wrong Half the Time
A rather startling finding by Westat (PDF), a research company that recently evaluated (at the request of the Homeland Security Department) E-Verify, the online worker eligibility and verification program promoted by the federal government: the tool wrongly clears illegal workers about 54% of the time. In light of these results, Chuck Schumer, a vocal Democratic Senator on the need for comprehensive immigration reform, commented: “This is a wake-up call to anyone who thinks E-Verify is an effective remedy to stop the hiring of illegal immigrants.”
